Study Region Selection Criteria

Recommended by the Natural Resource Committee

of the Maine Tourism Commission (7/13/04)

  • Community demonstrates commitment and “buy-in” to tourism development to insure follow-through on recommendations resulting from Fermata study.

  • Community exhibits capacity and commitment to marketing their tourism products.

  • Qualified local tourism leaders are in place to move individual projects forward.

  • Tourism organizational capacity exists to continue to work on product development and community consensus building.

  • Chosen areas should be rich in natural resource product potential, but limited on capacity to develop products around the resource.

  • Low income, less developed geographic regions should be given priority.

  • Community/region demonstrates a commitment to a planned and balanced approach to tourism development and has some goals and objectives toward that end.

  • Communities demonstrate an interest and willingness to work with relevant state conservation and planning officials to plan for resource protection and sustainability (Added by Maine Audubon).
